Kolorowy Wiking? / Colorful Viking?

Stwierdzenie, że Wikingowie przykładali wagę do wyglądu swojego ubioru mogłoby wydawać się absurdem. Jednak badacze z Muzeum Narodowego w Kopenhadze stwierdzili coś innego. Dla Wikingów miała być ważna nie tylko praktyczna część stroju, ale też kolory i kształty.

It would seem an absurd to tell that Vikings were paying attention about their clothing. However the researchers from National Museum of Copenhagen told something different. Not only practical side of clothing were important for Vikings. It seems that they also paid attention to colors and shapes.

Kobiece ozdoby / Female decorations

Stroje, które nosiły kobiety często były opatrzone w ozdobne hafty z jedwabiu, barwione na kolor srebrny lub złoty. Płaszcze, czy fartuszki, spinano broszkami o różnych kształtach (żółwiowe, jak w skandynawskim fartuszku, o kształcie muszli, itp.). Także biżuteria zmieniała się na przestrzeni wieków.

Clothes which were wearing by women were made with an ornamental fancywork from silk, colored on silver or gold. Coats or aprons were tied up by brooches in different shapes (like turtles and shells for example). Also jewelry were changing over the years.

Z przeprowadzanych analiz wynika, że na różnych terytoriach Wikingowie mieli odmienne upodobania co do kolorów noszonej odzieży: np. w Skandynawii preferowano kolor niebieski, natomiast na terenie Anglii czerwony.

Research tells us that on the different territories Vikings were having different taste to colors of their clothing, for example in the Scandinavia they prefer blue, in the England red.

Należy pamiętać, że Wikingowie bardzo dużo podróżowali. Nic dziwnego, że ich gust oraz dostęp do różnorodności zmieniał się z czasem. Choć ich stereotypowa postać kojarzy się głównie z walką i grabieżami, nie można już powiedzieć, że walczyli i grabili w strojach bez gustu.

We have to remember that Vikings were traveling a lot. It's not such weird that their taste and access to diversity was changing. Even if their stereotypical image is associated with fights and robberies we can not say that they were fighting and stealing with no taste.

EMILY AND RYAN WEDDING OUTFIT

Today I would like to show you costume that was made for a special occasion. I can easily tell that it’s the only such an occasion in a lifetime.

In October I got an email from Emily. Together, with her ​​fiancé Ryan, they decided to get married in an amazing style - instead of the traditional white dress and suit they wanted to wear early medieval Viking costumes.

With their courtesy, I can show you pictures made in the beautiful and snowy Colorado Springs.

Wedding date has also been appointed for an unusual day - Germanic Jul. The holiday is celebrated on December 21 during the winter solstice night. This is the time when the day becomes longer. The Sun wins the night. A very important day in the pre-Christian tradition and today - for all those who are closely associated with nature and the native culture. 

Dzisiaj mam do pokazania strój, który powstał na specjalną okazję. Można powiedzieć że na jedyną taką okazję w życiu.

W październiku napisała do mnie Emily.  Razem ze swoim narzeczonym Ryanem postanowili wziąć ślub w niesamowitym stylu  - zdecydowali, że zamiast tradycyjnej białej sukni i garnituru przebiorą się we wczesnośredniowieczne stroje wikińskie. Dzięki ich uprzejmości mogę pokazać zdjęcia, zrobione w przepięknym zimowym plenerze Colorado Springs.

Data ślubu została również wyznaczona na niezwykły dzień  - Jul dla Germanów, Szczodre Gody dla Słowian.  Święto obchodzone  21 grudnia czyli noc przesilenia zimowego. To od tej chwili dzień staje się coraz dłuższy,  Słońce zwycięża nad nocą.  Bardzo ważny dzień w tradycji przedchrześcijańskiej oraz współcześnie, dla tych wszystkich którzy są blisko związani z naturą i rodzimą kulturą. 

Emily’s costume consists of a classic linen early medieval dress . Dress was decorated with tablet selvedges in a pattern of diamonds. Thank you, Kram Sigrun.  Both pieces were fitted together by color.

Another element of the costume was a long woolen apron dress, made of beautiful blue wool with a visible weave. The apron has no ornaments. It was fastened with brooches on the chest. Amber beads, added by Emily, make it all look very festive.

The only element that can be associated with modern wedding is the color of Emily’s cloak. This is a coat that I call a cloak of Valkyria because it’s based on the clothing worn by one of the female figures found in Gotland. The cloak has a linen lining in very light blue color and gray hems made of wool.

Na kostium Emily składała się klasyczna lniana sukienka wczesnośredniowieczna, prosta w wykroju. Została ozdobiona krajkami tabliczkowymi we wzór diamentów. Zasługa Kramu SigrunJ Oba elementy zostały dopasowane kolorystycznie.

Kolejnym elementem stroju był długi wełniany fartuszek, wykonany z pięknej niebieskiej wełny z widocznym splotem. Fartuszek nie ma ozdób. Został spięty broszami na piersiach, a dodane przez Emily bursztynowe paciorki sprawiają że całość wygląda bardzo odświętnie.

Elementem który może kojarzyć  kolorystycznie z nowoczesnym ślubem, jest płaszcz. Ale skojarzenie pojawia się tylko ze względu na biel. Jest to płaszcz, który ja nazywam płaszczem Valkyrii, ponieważ wzorowany jest na stroju, który przyozdabia jedną z figurek kobiecych znalezionych na Gotlandii. Opończa  ma lnianą podszewkę w kolorze bardzo jasnego błękitu oraz szare obszycia.

Ryan's outfit consists of a tunic and narrow pants. Tunic is sewn on the basis of a simple pattern from  Birka. It was made of medium thick wool and has two wedges on both sides. Tunic is decorated with a selvedge with a pattern of blue and white triangles. Color of the pants is matched to apron, color of the tunic is similar to dress fabric. With this combination, both bride’s and groom’s outfits were composed to fit each other perfectly. 

Na strój Ryana składa się tunika – uszyta według prostego wykroju z Birki. Jest wykonana z cienkiej wełny i ma dwa kliny po obu stronach. Tunika ozdobiona jest krajką we wzór trójkątów. Spodnie kolorystycznie odpowiadają fartuszkowi. Dzięki takiemu połączeniu strój oboga narzeczonych stanowi kompozycyjnie zamknięta całość.
